I can’t believe it! It’s Friday!! Woo hoo!!
It has been the week-from-you-know-where. I’m off work next week and it seems that somehow things always go to pot right before a vacation. But it’s now Friday and I can almost breathe a deep sigh of relief!
I have this theory (at least I use it to justify my fibery wanderings and expenses!!)…..if you work hard, you must play hard once in a while to recover. So that’s it folks, Susan and I need a break from stressful work situations, so we are treating ourselves to some annual therapy! What are we doing, you ask??? Why we are heading up to Guemes Island this weekend for another very relaxing, very educational week with Judith McKenzie McCuin and a small group of fellow spinners! And we’ve talked Jan and Lorraine into joining us!
Last year at Guemes was absolutely wonderful! A weeklong class with Judith (spinning, dyeing, knitting…), gorgeous unseasonably sunny weather, a luxurious hot-rock massage from a massuese who comes over from Anacortes, and a nice bottle of wine each evening! Ah…..the good life!
Here’s a shot of our outside dyeing class with Judith:

Now I need to get through today’s bit of work, come home and PACK MY BAGS!!!

Whew! We finally had a decent enough break in the rain that I was able to get 3 goats sheared AND the barn cleaned out this past weekend! If that doesn’t give me a feeling of accomplishment, I don’t know what will. Since goats won’t go out in the rain, and it’s rained about 36 straight days here……that barn was getting deep. I was keeping my goaties clean with more straw all the time……must be a name for that kind of “in-barn-layered-compost”. They all got a manicure (hoof trimming!) and a little powder to keep the lice off of them. There will be no photos because I sheared them…..and they don’t look so hot right now. I left their ridgeline on them (mostly guard hair anyway) to help keep them warm. And I left a little on their hindquarters and legs for warmth. Poor things, good thing they don’t care what they look like!!
Spinning - I haven’t sat a my wheel since the first weekend in January- when Susan, Jan, and Kathryn and I headed down to the beach for a “girls weekend”. Much fun was had by all. Too bad the local yarn shop was a bust this year. Then I sprained my foot in the goat pasture. Great. Now that my foot is better, I’m beginning to think about spinning again…..
Knitting - I’ve finally mustered up enough courage and started knitting something out of the yarn I made from Buckwheat’s baby fleece last year. This is the skein that I won best of show at Black Sheep this past summer. I was so shocked to win that the skein actually was intimidating. Would I be able to make something worthy of this skein? Yikes! I’m about 4″ into the Flower Basked Shawl that was in IK a year or so ago….my first real lace project. And I’ve heard blogs are boring without pictures, so I give you a picture of Buckwheat from last winter….

Fiber - I’m currently hand processing an award-winning Pygora fleece. It is a fleece to die for, surely! I’ve gotten it all hand-dehaired and washed. Now I’m teasing it open and hand carding small batches. Very Nice Stuff! Can’t wait to spin it up!!
