Yarn Shopping = Total Insanity?

Ah!  The weekend is HERE!  I don’t know how other fibery people feel, but if I don’t have something fibery to look forward to while toiling away at work - I would go CRAZY!

Ok, here’s the deal: I live about 45 minutes north of Portland and have never been to a yarn shop there.  There are alot of yarn shops in Portland!  The Oregonian did a nice big article about the Knitting Olympics (of which I was totally clueless about) and the article included a nice, comprehensive list of yarn shops in the area.  So what does a person do with such a nice list?  Take a ROAD TRIP!  Preferrably with numerous best fibery friends!

So that is what we’re doing today!!  Hee hee hee!!!!  Susan, Jan, Kathryn, and myself are going shop hopping!  Woo Hoo!

Now you realize this is complete and utter insanity, don’t you?  I mean really!  My house currently has an ‘R’ rating over 200.  This is achieved by tons of fiber and wool.  Do I need more yarn.  Uh, well, no…………….but that’s not the point, eh?  It’s all about the sensory overload one gets when stepping into a well-stocked yarn shop.  Ah, the possibilities abound!  Talk about a good way to get some great inspiration.  While yarn should be considered “out of bounds”, I’m not above snagging some nice stuff that I don’t easily have access to.  Heh heh heh…..and then there’s the patterns, books (would like to find a copy of Mason Dixon Knitting - hear that may be a good one to get).   Oh!  And I’m curious about the one shop: Abundant Yarns and Dyeworks (or something like that).  Will be curious what kinds of dyes they sell.

I’ll promise to be a good girl.  Promise to be a good girl…….*we’ll see!*

After yarn shop hopping ,we’ll end up in the Pearl - and I’ve always wanted to go shopping down there - neat little botique-y kind of shops.

Might be kind of hard on the wallet - but will definately be good for the soul!

So I must be losing it….

I was at work today - fuming because a major system has to be shutdown tomorrow for repairs and my only backup is an old, beat-up antique piece of crap that won’t quite keep up.  Ah, not their problem - it’s my problem.  Great.  Well, I’ll save you from further work whining…..however……as I’m standing at the top of this enormous tank - muttering to myself that I should’ve chosen a different career….my mind begans to drift…..

Now, mind you, this is a stainless steel, 1200 gallon tank with a water fill system and 55# steam.  Oh!  I thought….I sure wish I had this dinasour in my back yard!!!  Man could I dye up some fiber in this baby!!  WOW!  Kettle dyeing! (not sure how that differs from regular dyeing..).  I could dip dye till I ran out of fiber (I’m not certain that is physically possible).  And well, you know what this tank was originally installed for?  Dyes!  Yep!  Fiber reactive dyes - and we have tons of them in the warehouse.  Hmmmm.  No acid dyes, however.  I’d better befriend our chemical supplier!!  Yep - I am definately losing it.

Terry (photos of fingerless Pygora-blend gloves coming in next blog entry - gotta try that light tent idea that Jessica explained).
