Summer Art!

We are always looking for new ideas and ways to enhance our fiber blends that we sell.  We spotted a great idea while perusing the BSG trade show…and I would give this gal credit for her great idea - but cannot recall her name.  I do believe she did an article for the technique and it will be in the fall Spin-Off!  These rather large rolags (or punis) will spin a softly self-striping yarn.  What fun!  It’s one thing to use another’s great idea - it’s quite another to successfully execute said idea.  I think Susan was completely successful, eh?

Summer Update

It’s time for another blog post, and I’m not sure where to begin…

Maybe you would like to see the view from the back of my Jeep?

Fleeces purchased at Black Sheep and washed in Susan’s washing machine.  Time for some serious dye sessions!!!

How about what I’m currently spinning?  Some very nice llama roving that I “water-color” dyed.  For some reason I just fell in love with these colors.  It ends up looking like a spring meadow and reminds me of Scott Mountain  (Idaho) in July!

Or maybe a couple shots of the boys - they are enjoying the playset in the backyard!

How about a shot of our garden (this shot is almost 3 wks ago - things have really taken off in there) -

And is anyone out there in blogland eager to try their hand at processing/spinning nettle fibers?  Come see me - it’s free for the taking!  I have great quantities!!

And here’s my two “brothers”: Spanky & Chip hanging out in their pasture.  They are such sweet boys.  Notice they are sporting their summer coat (no soft fuzz for them this time of year!).

And last, but not least - a parting “family shot” -

The Farm Diet
Posted by: Terry & Susan @ 12:18 pm

Everyone here on the farm is dieting - well, ok, except the hens, the dog and both cats.  I guess that leaves Gary, myself, and our herd of Pygora goats.  (pronounced “pig-ora” right now!).  Goats shouldn’t be overweight, just as us humans shouldn’t.  Goats are very smart and when after food they can be downright tenacious!  I’ve had “the boys” on a diet this summer - mostly because they are out in the electric pasture.  We have two pastures here on Sonny Wether Fiber Farm:

 The main pasture…..

and the electric pasture.  This pasture is surrounded by electric net fencing we began using last year.  This stuff works great!  We do have two rules (#1 = it’s always on/hot) and (#2 = nobody is in this pasture when we’re not home).  As you can see, both pastures have been nibbled back quite a bit.  So the boys get a small supplement of hay in the morning and the evening.  This - in their opinion - is NOT enough hay.  When Gary built our little barn, he put in a small “mezzanine” to store a couple bales of hay.  Our main hay storage is in the shop.  If we were to do this over, we’d build a setup where I could feed without all my helpers at my side!!

But my goats remain fat ~

And I noticed we were going through the hay faster than normal.  Gary’s been helping me feed while Susan and I were out peddling fiber this month.  It seems our boys are big enough they can scam extra flakes (or two!) from the mezzanine - even with stuff shoved waaaay back against the wall.  Time for a barn remodel.  Good thing my husband is so handy with the power tools!

Here’s the new addition to the barn - a goat deflector!  See the plywood-hinged part above the goats?  Heh heh heh….

The goat deflector is well supported by 2 x 4’s in the back and held up in place with two double-ended clips.

Thunder is NOT amused….he can’t steal another flake!

I wonder if one of these would work on the house fridge…..?
